TREASURE CHEST PIRATE CAKE
This
recipe came to us from my sister. Each year she bakes her grandkids a birthday party cake, but it started back with her children.
People go crazy over her cakes.Recipe by Grandma: 1) Bake cake in a 11x15 pan, cut a 2" section out of the middle of the cake and use that middle section for making 3 wedges. 2)
Place the wedges on the back of one of the cake pieces, now becoming
the bottom of the chest. The lower end of the wedge needs to be at the
back thus allowing for the top to be slightly open, when placed on top
of the wedges. 3) Use fruit roll up with sprinkles on it for
the band. White chocolate squares for the decorations around the band.
The latch and hook were made with cut out gummy candy. 4) I used decorating icing to write my grandson's name and a 7 with sprinkles on top and various candies placed coming out of chest and onto the tray. We let the kids pick three items out of the chest
before we cut the pirate cake. They loved that more than eating the
pirate cake. Believe it or not the boys went wild over the various
necklaces. I had stand up candles (pirate theme) on the plate. My
grandson was so proud of his cake. He loves gaudy stuff. I normally
would not have placed so much candy coming out of the chest but it's
about my grandson's birthday and making memories.
PIRATE HAT CAKE 1) Bake a round cake using our yellow cake recipe or
your own favorite store bought or homemade. You will only be using one
round cake so you will have an extra to make another pirate hat or even
decorate with a cake topper or whatever you choose to do with it. 2) Use a long knife to trim the tops of the cakes to make them flat, if needed. 3)
Spread a thin layer of chocolate frosting over the trimmed side of one
cake, then lay the other cake on top, trimmed side down. 4) Cut one side from the stack, as shown. Cut this piece in half and assemble the hat. 5)
Spoon 1/4 cup of the chocolate frosting into a resealable sandwich bag,
set it aside, and use the rest of the frosting to cover the cake. 6) Frost with white decorators' frosting add a skull and crossbones, and hat trim. 7) Snip a corner from the bag of chocolate frosting and pipe on the skull features. This cake Serves 12.
